FITNESS

USMS Fitness Events —— The USMS Fitness Committee is planning some fun, challenging events for this year. These events will be less competitive in nature, and can be done any time at any pool. You can use an event to set a goal, which will make your time in the pool more interesting, challenging, and fun. Your goals may involve any number of possibilities, such as learning to swim a new stroke, swimming faster, swimming greater distances, or logging your distance over time. Having a goal is an ideal way to enhance your exercise and fitness experience, so consider trying one of the USMS Fitness Events.

Check-Off Challenge

The objective of this event is to challenge yourself by making a check list and swimming each of 18 swimming events found in pool competition. The participating swimmer will get a T-shirt in advance, which will list the 18 swimming events on the back. These events will include: 50 free, 100 free, 200  free, 400 or 500 free, 800 or 1000 free, 1500 or  1650 free, 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast, 50 fly, 100 fly, 200 fly, 100 IM, 200 IM, 400 IM. As you swim the events, keep track on the accompaning form. You can swim them during practice, during a swim meet, during an organized open water event, or during an organized open water training session -- any time, any place, at your own pace!

Go the Distance in 2010!

In the past three years, GTD has become the fastest growing USMS program. More than 1,000 members participated in this USMS fitness event in 2009. GTD is a self-directed program intended to encourage Masters swimmers to regularly exercise and track their progress. There is no time limit for the distance milestones, except that they must be achieved in the calendar year 2010. Speed does not count - just the effort to attain whatever goal you set for yourself.

GTD is on the honor system - you track the distance you swim. Daily, weekly, or monthly, you enter that information into your online Fitness Log (FLOG). When you achieve certain milestones, ranging from 50 miles through 1500 miles, you will be recognized on the U.S. Masters Swimming website, in the monthly e-newsletter STREAMLINES, and receive special prizes from our new title sponsor for the event, Nike Swim.

There is no cost to enter GTD. You may register for GTD through your FLOG in the My USMS section of the website. Your FLOG allows you to to track all your fitness activity, not just swimming, while simultaneously participating in GTD. Once you've entered GTD, your results are automatically included in the daily summary reports, and your milestone awards are sent directly to you.
